Installation of Shadow™

It is generally best to install the Shadow™ components in the following order:
  1. Shadow™ Dispatcher
  2. Shadow™ Target(s)
  3. Shadow™ Viewer

Installation Of Shadow™ Dispatcher

To install the Shadow™ Dispatcher:
  1. Run the Shadow™ installer and click Next.
  2. From the drop down menu of the Type of Install dialog select "Shadow Dispatcher" and click Next.
  3. Select an installation folder (the disk space required is displayed in the dialog) and click Install.
  4. You can now configure the port number that the Shadow™ Dispatcher will run on. This can be any valid port number but take care not to use a port that is already in use. If you skip this step then you can run the Shadow™ Dispatcher later and configure the port number then.
  5. You can then choose to install Shadow™ Dispatcher as a Windows™ service. If you select to install as a service then the Shadow™ Dispatcher will automatically start up every time that you reboot your machine. If you select no at this stage then you can install the Shadow™ Dispatcher as a Windows™ service later via the Start Menu.
  6. You can then decide if you would like a shortcut to the installed Shadow™ Dispatcher placed on your desktop.
Installation of the Shadow™ Dispatcher is now complete and you can access the application via
  • Start
    • Programs
      • Brandt Technologies
        • Shadow Suite

Installation Of Shadow™ Target

To install the Shadow™ Target:
  1. Run the Shadow™ installer and click Next.
  2. From the drop down menu of the Type of Install dialog select "Shadow Target" and click Next.
  3. Select an installation folder (the disk space required is displayed in the dialog) and click Install.
  4. You will then be asked if you would like to install the mirror driver. It is strongly recommended to install this mirror driver in order for the Shadow™ Target to run efficiently at modern screen resolutions.
  5. You can now configure the Shadow™ Dispatcher information. Enter the Shadow™ Dispatcher name; this is the network name (or I.P. address) of the machine on which the Shadow™ Dispatcher will run.
  6. Enter the Shadow™ Dispatcher port number. This is the port number that you used when configuring the Shadow™ Dispatcher installation in the previous section. The Shadow™ Dispatcher and Target(s) must all be running on the same port number for the suite to work correctly.
  7. Click OK to continue.
  8. You can then choose to install Shadow™ Target as a Windows™ service. If you select to install as a service then the Shadow™ Target will automatically start up every time that you reboot the remote machine. This is highly desirable for a remote management tool. If you select no at this stage then you can install the Shadow™ Target as a Windows™ service later via the Start Menu.
  9. You can then decide if you would like a shortcut to the installed Shadow™ Target placed on your desktop.
Installation of the Shadow™ Target is now complete and you can access the application via
  • Start
    • Programs
      • Brandt Technologies
        • Shadow Suite

Running Shadow™

Shadow™ is a suite of software that allows the end user to control many remote machines simultaneously.
The remote machines that are controlled must be running the Shadow™ Target software and be connected to a machine running the Shadow™ Dispatcher.
The controlling (client) machine must be running the Shadow™ Viewer software and be connected to a machine running the Shadow™ Dispatcher.

Running Shadow™ Dispatcher

If the Shadow™ Dispatcher is installed as a Windows™ service then the application can be controlled via the Windows™ Services snap-in. Further, the Shadow™ Dispatcher service will automatically start when the machine is started. The port that the Shadow™ Dispatcher service uses is configured in the file shadowDispatcherConfig.xml.

To run the Shadow™ Dispatcher software as a standard (non-service) application simply open the application, select a port number and click OK.

Whenever the Shadow™ Dispatcher application is running an icon will appear in the Windows™ system tray. Hovering your mouse cursor over this icon will show you the current port number that the Shadow™ Dispatcher is listening on.

Running Shadow™ Target

If the Shadow™ Target is installed as a Windows™ service then the application can be controlled via the Windows™ Services snap-in. Further, the Shadow™ Target service will automatically start when the machine is started. The {Shadow™ Dispatcher, port number} combination that the Shadow™ Target service uses is configured in the file shadowTargetConfig.xml.

To run the Shadow™ Target software as a standard (non-service) application simply:
  1. Open the Shadow™ Target Application
  2. Enter the network name or I.P. address of the machine running the Shadow™ Dispatcher that you would like to connect to.
  3. Enter the port number that the Shadow™ Dispatcher is listening on.
  4. Click OK.

Whenever the Shadow™ Target application is running an icon will appear in the Windows™ system tray. Hovering your mouse cursor over this icon will show you the current connection status of the Shadow™ Target.

The trial version of the Shadow™ suite restricts the number of Shadow™ Targets to 2.

Running Shadow™ Viewer

The Shadow™ Viewer software runs as a standard (non-service) application.

To run the Shadow™ Viewer software:
  1. Open the Shadow™ Viewer Application
  2. Enter the network name or I.P. address of the machine running the Shadow™ Dispatcher that you would like to connect to.
  3. Enter the port number that the Shadow™ Dispatcher is listening on.
  4. Click OK.
  5. You will then be presented with a list of the Shadow™ Target machines that you may connect to - in the trial version this number is restricted to 2.
  6. Select the machines that you wish to connect to and click OK.
  7. The resultant windows are all dockable and you can re-arrange them on your desktop to best suit your needs.
